Software

Software refers to a collection of programs, instructions, and data that tell a computer how to perform specific tasks. Unlike hardware, which is the physical component of a computer, software is intangible and operates within the hardware to process information.

Types of Software:

  1. System Software:

    • Manages hardware resources and provides services for other software.
    • Examples: Operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux), device drivers, utilities.
  2. Application Software:

    • Designed for end-users to perform specific tasks.
    • Examples: Word processors, web browsers, video editors, games.
  3. Middleware:

    • Connects different software applications or systems.
    • Examples: Database middleware, message brokers.
  4. Programming Software:

    • Tools for developers to write, test, and debug software.
    • Examples: Text editors, compilers, debuggers, IDEs.
  5. Embedded Software:

    • Operates within specialized devices like microwaves, cars, or medical equipment.
