A smart factory is characterized by the combination of different technologies that work seamlessly together. NTT Data explains the role AI and edge computing play in this.

- Precise and adaptive robot control: In the near future, robots will be more flexible, autonomous, and fully integrated into the Industrial Metaverse thanks to artificial intelligence and modern sensor technology. With the help of high-resolution cameras, AI-supported image processing, edge computing, and generative AI (GenAI), they will be able to analyze their environment in real time and respond flexibly to even the most unforeseen situations. GenAI, in particular, helps robots develop creative solutions in the event of production disruptions or material shortages and independently select alternatives. Integration into the Industrial Metaverse will also further link the physical and digital production worlds: Digital twins, for example, enable production processes to be monitored and simulated in real time without disrupting ongoing operations. This enables companies to make informed decisions and increase their efficiency. Edge computing provides the necessary computing power for data processing and decision-making directly on-site, while the current 5G mobile communications standard ensures extremely fast and reliable data transmission with low latency, as required by real-time applications.
- Real-time quality control: In modern production, the combination of AI, edge computing, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) enables a completely new type of quality control. AI-supported image processing and pattern recognition ensure that production defects—such as incorrectly assembled components, surface defects such as scratches and cracks, color deviations, or missing components—are detected in real time. Sensors installed directly on production equipment and lines continuously collect data, which is transmitted via the IIoT network to local edge computing systems. GenAI will also play an important role in quality control: When robots encounter unknown or irregular objects in production, they can not only recognize them but also independently find a solution to the problem. For example, the robot can identify an unfamiliar component using databases or images from the internet and determine how to handle it correctly to avoid damage or production interruptions.
- Predictive maintenance: Predictive maintenance is being revolutionized through the use of these technologies. Sensors on critical machine components such as bearings, motors, and hydraulic systems continuously monitor operating parameters such as temperature, vibration, noise, and pressure. This data is analyzed in real time to monitor the condition of the machines and indicate deviations that indicate wear or impending failure. GenAI enables even more advanced maintenance solutions. GenAI can not only detect anomalies but also develop suggestions for optimizing machine parameters – with the goal of minimizing wear and extending service life. If a defect is imminent, the technology also suggests alternative repair strategies in real time.
- Optimized warehousing and energy efficiency: Automated inventory monitoring is another benefit. Sensors continuously record the stock of materials and components, allowing inventory levels to be automatically updated and adjusted. Intelligent, real-time inventory management can prevent parts from being missing or unnecessarily held, reducing storage costs and capital commitment. Combined with predictive maintenance and real-time quality control, this type of inventory management helps make production processes even smoother. Avoiding machine breakdowns and immediately detecting production errors can prevent delays and optimize inventory management to meet current demand. Efficient material flow minimizes unnecessary warehouse movements and processes, enabling significant energy savings. This directly contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions and helps companies achieve their sustainability goals while reducing operating costs.
